Does Playing Sports Help Girls?

At a time when so many women are delivering such electrifying performances at the Winter Olympics, we can find this question especially useful:

Does participation in sports make a long-term difference in a woman’s life?

An article in the New York Times takes a look. It cites separate studies by two economists. One examines the effect of playing sports on education and employment. Another studies the tie between sports and health.

Anyone who coaches girls could find it a valuable read. Many thanks to John Kessel of USA Volleyball for sending the link.

  1. I found this piece very interesting and quite beleivable. I’ve always believed playing sports has helped myself and others achieve success in life. Strange coincidence, the professor quoted in the story Dr. Kaestner was my Economics professor and advisor at Rider College back around 1990-91. Further, I have two daughters 8 and 5 and actively participate as a coach in most of their sporting activities.
