Beating the Odds

Choosing Your Quality

As coaches we often find ourselves wishing for more. We wish we had bigger athletes, stronger ones, faster ones. We wish we had bigger budgets and more gym time.

In his latest Janssen Sports Leadership Center Update, coach Jeff Janssen writes about someone whose job was to create a top-level school with no extra resources.
That was the assignment for principal Muriel T. Summers at A.B. Combs Elementary School in Raleigh, N.C.

You can read about her approach here.

I particularly liked the “Hamburger Rubric,” in which we can use something as ordinary as ordering a hamburger to show various levels of quality and commitment.

If it works in a grade school or in a hamburger shack, it can work in your gym!
