Beating the Odds

How to Become a Champion

If you want to get to the top of your field, you can find a great example in tennis star Serena Williams. She’s at the top of hers, after beating Maria Sharapova to win the French Open.

One year after losing in the first round, Williams rebounded to capture her 16th major title.

“It’s all about, for me, how you recover,” Williams said. “I think I’ve always said a champion isn’t about how much they win, but it’s about how they recover from their downs, whether it’s an injury or whether it’s a loss.”

Everybody losses, including Williams. But not everyone reacts to losing the way Williams does. For instance, she used last year’s first-round loss as motivation.

The more often you can step back and take something constructive from a loss, the better your chances of becoming a champion.
