How to Win

Blueprint for a Leader

This sounds like an ordinary ad placed by any company looking for a strong leader.

“We are looking for someone with whom and around whom we can build a foundation for sustained success. The next manager must have leadership and communication skills; he must place an emphasis on preparation and accountability; he must establish high standards and a winning culture; he must have integrity and an open mind; and he must have managerial or coaching experience at the major league level.”

But it’s not just any ad and it’s not just any company. It’s an article about the Chicago Cubs, who are looking for a new manager. Theo Epstein, who recently left the Boston Red Sox to join the Cubs, announced that manager Mike Quade won’t be returning. And the man to replace Quade must fit the above job description.

But more importantly, do you? Besides laying out what they want in a manager, the Cubs are also presenting a blueprint for any leadership slot. Communication. High standards. Integrity. Preparation.

Whether you’re hiring or applying, these qualities are ones around which to move forward.
