Ron Washington Questions

No one is perfect. Let’s begin any discussion of Ron Washington’s cocaine use there.

Having said that, you still wonder how Washington, manager of baseball’s Texas Rangers, ever got involved in cocaine.

Exactly how did he get into a situation where cocaine was present?
What contributed to what he himself calls a moment of weakness?

We may never know the answers to those questions. And now that the Rangers have agreed to keep Washington in his job, there will be others. How will his players react to him once they return to the day-to-day routine? Has his authority been undermined?

Hall of Fame Manager Casey Stengel used to say, “The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided.”
Washington just made that part of his job more difficult. Adding to the challenge will be general manager Jon Daniels’ statement that he expects the Rangers to win.

If the team starts poorly, or if there is any sign that Washington has lost the clubhouse, a change in managers could come quickly.

  1. this is a scary story, Mike

ESPN Radio reeported that supposedly this was his first time?

In his late 50’s using cocaine for a first time? Thats INSANE and how irresponsible and immature for some one in our age bracket to begin experiment with drugs

a ESPN reporter then said he may have been better off saying that he has had a cocaine use problem for a while and needs help

he may have gotten more public sympathy that way at least

Again as I led off my comment
