Follow Your Bliss

One of our graduated players has taken the time to email, saying she loves her new school– Duke University.

I envy her. On her campus is one of the great coaches in the world, Mike Krzyzewski. He not only coaches the university’s men’s basketball team, but he also led the United States men to a gold medal in the Beijing Olympics.

Imagine having the chance to attend one of his practices, just to see how he does things!
Then it occurred to me that college campuses are filled with people who are experts in their field. Whether it’s in basketball, physics or psychology, these people have spent thousands of hours pursuing a passion.

And if my education is any measure, college students never spend much time tapping into that interest. They study, but it’s just to get grades. Not to gain knowledge.

My friend Dr. Rob Gilbert has spent decades as a professor of sports psychology. Over that time, he has taught hundreds of athletes, physical education majors and aspiring coaches. Yet, he says, he can count on one hand the number of people who truly wanted to learn more about sports psychology.

If I were at Duke, I would immediately go to the athletic office and volunteer to help out in the basketball program. I would sort equipment, keep stats, mop floors, anything to let me be around a person who has coached one Olympics and will be coaching a second.

Of course, that’s MY passion. It doesn’t have to be YOUR passion. Whatever your passion is, I hope you follow it. And if you don’t have one yet, I hope you find one.

    Great stuff-
    It is all about “Passion”.
I will always remeber the slogan
” Find something you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”
